It's really 'neutral' news. It means that Iomega stock shouldn't tank for at least another quarter or two (possibly just prolonging the agony, and creating more missed opportunity costs from good stocks). Remember, Sony wasn't there in 1998 when Iomega lost millions. Iomega did that to themselves.

Again, I really think the scenario that's playing out here is one where all product lines (but ZIP) will continue to be money losers. ZIP will be an add on 'give away' option only (one of many flavors: 100Mb, 250Mb, ???). So all eggs are in one basket: disk sales.

Again, we will see, but this is the way it's played out so far..

No doubt about it, however, IOM needs to diversify is product line very quickly. It's bothersome to me that the company generates 70% of their revenue from one product. IOM's situation is similar to company deriving 70% of their revenue from one client, when one is in that situation, it's just a matter of time before.....

I'm surprised that IOM has not gone after network storage appliances, similar to this: snapserver.com. The market for this type of product is supposed to be huge for the next couple of years. Needless to say, this kind of product will be aimed at the corporate side of the market (where there is some kind of pricing power,) and will diversify IOM's product mix.

Just thinking outloud.

Glad to see you posting again, noticed that you had turned the lights out on the Syquest thread and appropriately so, I've enjoyed your posts about Syquest over the years.

Been thinking about that experiment and how they tried to make a bigger better mouse trap and, it was, but it didn't work.
That process validated that storage size wasn't the deciding factor and that the larger storage sized product was a niche market, the 100 megabyte increment was more desirable even though you could buy a gigabyte for very little more.

Sony's had quite a spin machine working the major magazines the last few years, particularly in the summer of 97 when most of them spewed out accolades for the HiFD drive . Many at the same time slandered Zip calling it unreliable and recommending that one wait until HiFD was released. I suspect that these guys had a negative affect on the industry and slowed the overall acceptance of Zip. Watching this story unfold over the last few years has given me the impression that Sony's been a powerful force against IOM.

By the time HiFD can have any meaningful retail sales Zip will have 30 million or more drives in circulation. Sony could qualify for OEM inclusion in Q1 or Q2 of next year but by that time Zip will have such a commanding lead that the issue for Sony will be compatibility with the rest of the industry and how to include Zip in their systems without looking too bad. Guess what goes around comes around.

FWIW noticed that the average share purchase has grown lately from 800 per transaction to 1200 and today 1600+.
