WASHINGTON, April 27 (Reuters) - President Bill Clinton on Tuesday established a commission on U.S. seaport crime and security aimed at combating problems including drug trafficking and cargo theft.

The panel, to be co-chaired by Attorney General Janet Reno, Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater and Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin, will have a year to consider the problem and forward its recommendations, the White House said.

Democrat Senator Bob Graham had been pressing Clinton to establish the commission for over a year.

''No one state is more affected by this problem than Florida,'' said Graham, whose state is home to five of the busiest U.S. ports.

Graham said trade through seaports was predicted to triple in the next two decades but these harbors were increasingly plagued by crimes that also included illegal immigration and currency smuggling.

''We can't allow criminals and complacence to hijack this critical source of economic activity,'' the Senator said in a statement.

The Interagency Commission on Crime and Security in U.S. Seaports will be composed of up to 25 senior officials from federal departments and agencies with an interest in port security.
