*OT* This should keep the tech's fueled tomorrow:Ascend 1st-Qtr Profit Rises 62% on Sales to Phone Companies Alameda, California, April 27 (Bloomberg) -- Ascend Communications Inc., the No. 3 computer-networking company that's being acquired by Lucent Technologies Inc., said first-quarter profit rose 62 percent on surging sales to phone companies. Profit from operations rose to $84.9 million, or 36 cents a share, from net income of $52.4 million, or 26 cents, a year ago. The figures are pro forma to include results from an acquired company. Per-share earnings matched the average forecast of analysts polled by First Call Corp. Lucent, the No. 1 maker of telephone equipment, agreed in January to buy Ascend in a transaction now worth $22.9 billion to get powerful computer switches to compete with top networking company Cisco Systems Inc. Ascend had robust sales of those asynchronous transfer mode, or ATM, switches, and growth for its product that routes incoming Internet calls was also strong. ''It was a better quarter for access (products) than for core (ATM) switching,'' said Paul Johnson, an analyst with BancBoston Robertson Stephens, who rates Ascend ''buy.'' Pro forma revenue rose 67 percent to $509.4 million from $305.1 million a year earlier. The pro forma numbers include results for Stratus Computer Inc., which Alameda, California- based Ascend bought in October for $822 million. Ascend had a credit in the quarter related to its purchase of Stratus. Including the credit, Ascend's net income was $108.8 million, or 46 cents a share. Ascend shares fell 2 11/16 to 97 3/4, while Lucent fell 1 5/16 to 61 3/16. Ascend released its earnings after the close of regular U.S. trading. Lucent agreed to exchange 0.825 of its shares for each share of Ascend in a transaction expected to close in June. Apr/27/1999 17:12
