Try the historical quotes next time. They've never been under $10. You're viewing a split-adjusted timeline.

Ever hear of a "stock split?" They adjust the price to reflect splits.

Daniel,

It looks according to this chart that they were under 5...

Hint: Split-adjusted... It's a phrase that has meaning here. Just for you, here's the MSFT split history (MM/YY):

2 for 1 9/87
2 for 1 4/90
3 for 2 6/91
3 for 2 6/92
2 for 1 5/94
2 for 1 12/96
2 for 1 2/98
2 for 1 3/99

Daniel,

It looks according to this chart that they were under 5...

That chart has had the price adjusted for splits. To see the stock splits, do the following:

1. Press the interactive chart button
2. On the interactive chart, press the indicators button
3. On the upper indicators pull down menu, select "show splits"
4. Redraw the chart.

You will then see the stock splits which occurred as follows:

2-1 Sept 87
2-1 April 90
3-2 June 91
3-2 June 92
2-1 May 94
2-1 December 96
2-1 February 98

So to determine what the price was on any given day, take all the price from the chart, and multiply by all the splits that took place between now, and the time you are interested in.

To determine what the price was in 1986, you should multiply the price on the big chart by 72 (i.e. the product of all the splits between now and then is, 2 x 2 x 3/2 x 3/2 x 2 x 2 x 2 = 72).

For 1988, we would scale the split-corrected price by a factor of 36 to get the price in 1988. I can't read the numbers off the chart, but Value Line shows the price range as being between $1.30 and $2.20 (corrected for split). This works out to a price range of between $46.8 and $79.2.

As I said - I do not think that Microsoft was ever a penny stock.

Regards,
John Sladek
