The port cities seem to have been settled by the same mix of people. Next time you go there listen for the "Brooklyn" sound, you'll hear it soon enough. It's certainly not like any other accent in the south.

How anyone survived there in the years before air conditioning is a great mystery. My mom is from an old N.O. family, a little town south of the city is named for her ancestors. I grew up with gumbo, food of the gods.
