Rob, I don't think Intel will really be pushing the IA-32 performance of Merced. I have no idea what performance will be, but I'll bet the upcoming Foster from Intel will be faster at running IA-32 than Merced will be.

The IA-32 compatibility will be there to ease the transition from IA-32 to IA-64 on Merced and McKinley. I have no idea how they'll pull it off software-wise; there is some ultra-complicated stuff in Merced that deals with IA-32 compatibility.
