Paul and Thread - Fairly interesting Motely Fool Posting Thought this was worth sharing: Perspective of a former worker intellabee.boards.fool.com Subject: Intel "Inside" Date: 4/26/99 10:51 PM Author: giglet Number: of 6119 I've been reading these boards over the last several months with a lot of interest. It has been very interesting to see the "external" view of Intel. I was employed with Intel for approximately two years at the corporate site in Santa Clara, CA., and while I can't outline a lot of the internal product knowledge that I gained, I can divulge the inter-workings of the company. It is truly unique. The company is a complete machine! I don't think many people understand the amount of process and hands-on management style this company strives on. In fact, it was too much of a machine for me with little time for making it a fun environment. The big inside joke was the very last 1998 company goal stated, "have fun." It wasn't there in the 1999 goals. Intel strives on data!!!! Overkill in many cases, but it never makes a decision on a whim.... period!!! Anyone can question a decision at any level, and the person in charge of a meeting / presentation better be prepared with an agenda, supporting data and a bullet proof vest. I can honestly say that no one is protected, ever. In almost every situation, you will be drilled, and if the decision team thinks the data is insufficient, you are on the next week's agenda to come back for more lashes. To prepare you for this, your first day of Intel orientation includes a videotape called, "constructive confrontation." The gist of the film is to supposedly teach you to attack the issue / data, not the individual. I had a manager who once said joking that this was a legal film to keep Intel out of internal lawsuits. Sometimes after a few beatings myself, I wondered if he was right. Process, process, process..... From the top to the bottom. Weekly status reports, monthly status reports, quarterly status reports: REQUIRED Reported up and consolidated to each of the GM's for review and then redistributed down for the individuals to see what the other groups are working on. A quarterly presentation given by each of the EXECUTIVE MANAGEMENT to their respective groups about the financial status of the company and division, a graded status of the company and divisional goals for the latest quarter, and the objectives that have been established for the next quarter. This is mandatory and put in each of the executive team's MBOs. Stomps like an elephant, runs like a cheetah! This company can turn on a dime. Hard to believe with its incredible size, but it may miss the original "inflection" point, but once it understands it was thrown a sinking curve, it pulls out all guns to take the threat on. I worked at two start-ups before joining Intel that weren't as nimble, or focused. Intel has seen failures, and will continue to have them as well, has its share of politics, but the vast amount of resources this company draws from in both capital and human talent will definitely drive this company for many years to come, and the product roadmap looks strong! Foolin round with my kids now..... Posted on SI by PB, who loves working for Intel, and respectfully disagrees with the above author about Intel not being a fun place to work :-)).
