[NASDAQ:COMS] says it will ship 14 million units of its handheld devices by the year 2002. In 1996, less than two years after the company came out with the palmtops, it was able to hit the one million mark. Recently, an IDC study reported that the firm was able to ship 4.5 million units in 1998. 3Com, however, does not want to stop here. "We're not resting on our laurels," said Craig Will, 3Com Palm Computing's director for Asia Pacific region, during the local launch of the Palm 3x and the Palm V series. Considering that the Internet revolution will encourage more people to become connected to information, 3Com will continue to "deduce," as the company puts it, products that will meet customer needs. Meanwhile, the firm says it is determined to redefine what a handheld device is. Unlike its rivals, 3Com's philosophy for making handheld platforms is simple: it should be handy, useful, and, of course, stylish. "We really don't want to jam all PC features into a handheld device," says Paul Leeper, 3Com Palm Computing business development manager for Asia Pacific, as he examined what Microsoft has been doing with Windows CE. Palm V, the latest 3Com handheld device, for instance, follows 3Com's "Zen of Palm" philosophy of design. It is smaller, lighter, and has more features than its predecessors. It weighs four ounces, and is nearly one-half the thickness of the Palm III and Palm IIIx models. continued ............
