DoubleClick Says Net Loss Widened
Due to Sales and Marketing Expenses
By ANDREA PETERSEN
Staff Reporter of THE WALL STREET JOURNAL

NEW YORK -- DoubleClick Inc., an Internet advertising firm, said its first-quarter net loss widened by 56%, largely because of increased expenses due to sales and marketing as well as one-time items.

The company now reports revenue using a different method of calculation than in the past. Previously, it recorded 100% of the revenue it received from selling ad space on AltaVista, Compaq Computer Corp.'s popular search engine. Sales on AltaVista account for about 40% of DoubleClick's revenue.

Instead, DoubleClick now counts the portion of revenue that it actually keeps. DoubleClick said it was required to change its accounting method after it renegotiated its contract with AltaVista earlier this year.
