I still say that Linux needs a better underlying GUI driver than X windows. I concede that X windows is flexible but it is holy hell to program in and very bandwidth hoggy. Can we say bandwidth Hoggy? Is there any excuse these days for make-do non optimal code? Or non -optimal legacy hardware where it is not needed? Was that notthe idea of Linux in the first place to make a real non stop multi user multi tasking architecture that would lend itself to layers of code using these ready made features. So far it has shone in the in the networking game. What ho point and click? We are not all Unix nerds and the common man will need some hand holding to make it into the 21st century with the Linux desktop. KDE and Gnome are still works in progress and I can see BEOS like variants stealing ascendancy when someone decides to cater to the people who just want an appliance to use to communicate and calculate that eschews the fuzzy upgrade path trap of windows.

The Better Linux GUI can still be built.
