A Voodoo chip in my PDA? That would make a great pocket warmer - for about 2.47 minutes.

I found this article regarding the V3. It's a good (longish) read to remind us why we are still here.

Enjoy,

Interesting how noone here bothered to mention that Creative Technologies announced disappointing earnings yesterday. Even though Creative's revenues grew last quarter, margins dropped nearly 7% (from 32% to 25%). Word on the Street is that computer OEMs are gouging their suppliers (yeah, like that's new), and cost advantage will be the determining factor in OEM wins.

Personally, after looking at the industry and the specifics of the merger, I expect a pretty weak quarter. Even though Voodoo3 probably has higher planned gross margins, 3dfx has been spending alot of money in its consumer branding campaign, the merger expenses, the reserve it must take related to the $3M+ dispute with Diamond, and higher costs associated with low initial chip yields at the Voodoo3 production startup.

Additionally, the merger is being treated as a purchase for accounting purposes which muddies the waters since 3dfx will not be able to capture most of STB's revenues and income in the first quarter. Unlike the pooling method of accounting, 3dfx only gets to show revenues and costs from STB starting on the effective date of the merger (NOT the start of the most recent fiscal year). Unless 3dfx pays for the additional expense of doing proforma statements in the first quarter, we will get an apples-to-oranges comparison.

Handhelds and settop boxes are still fledgeling markets, so I'd consider this a risky move. A better market might be the laptops. I know SO many sysadmins with portables who play games on them. I'm sure they'd love some V3 loving' in their laps. ;)

Even if she is correct and they are entering these markets, seems to me they might already have the products mostly developed. In this case most of the R&D is already on the books, and the only forward-looking risk would be product manufacturing and rollout.

Aren't some of 3dfx's people from 3DO? Maybe they're trying to create a new console platform!

Cheers,
Tim

I worry that neither will pay decent margins for 3D chips.

What makes you think 3dfx would just make the chips? Seems like this merger allows them to think a little more outside the box.

handhelds? get creamed by intel? "sources" that she won't reveal? what kind of crap is that? she's basing a company's future on speculative products that don't even make sense! Plus she doesn't even understand the competition (intel makes handhelds?). Real good analyst huh. (Yeah, 3dfx will open it's own chain of convenience stores too but 7-11 will cream them... how do i know this? i have sources =) )

Can you post her email/URL? I think I want to write her a nice e-mail message.

(achem when has 3dfx ever been creamed by intel? i740? no. i752? no. Whitney? no., do we see a pattern here?)
