Company Profile: International Business Machines The statements were made during IBM's annual meeting in Miami, which also included announcement of a 9% dividend boost and shareholder approval of a 2-for-1 stock split. Responding to a shareholder question about the PC unit, Mr. Gerstner said IBM will "continue to give a substantial amount of attention" to the segment, which includes desktop PCs, laptops and small computer servers. IBM, Armonk N.Y., has faced more calls in recent months to exit its PC business, which lost nearly $1 billion last year amid price pressure and competition from rivals including Dell Computer Corp. and Compaq Computer Corp. But the unit showed strong improvement in the first quarter, boosted by sales of laptops and small servers. The pretax loss for the unit was $89 million, compared with $458 million in the year-earlier period. ...
