China Unicom to Buy Ericsson Equipment for 700,000 Subscribers

By Peter Harmsen at Bloomberg News

27 April 1999

China Unicom will buy GSM equipment from Ericsson AB of
Sweden, enabling it to expand the number of its mobile phone
subscribers by 700,000, the two companies said.

In addition to equipment, accessories and software, Ericsson,
the world's third-largest mobile phone maker, will provide
engineering and management services and establish a
technology service support center for Unicom. Ericsson didn't
give a figure for the value of the agreement.

GSM, or global system for mobile telecommunications, is a
protocol developed in Europe and is the dominant mobile
phone technology in China. Ericsson and Finland's Nokia
Oyje, the biggest suppliers of GSM equipment, say China,
including Hong Kong, is their biggest single market.

Depending on market conditions, China Unicom may
eventually buy additional Ericsson AB equipment to expand
the number of subscribers by another 300,000.

The equipment and related services will be delivered by two
Ericsson's joint ventures in China, Beijing Ericsson Mobile
Communications Co. and Nanjing Ericsson Communications
Co.

Since its establishment in July 1994, China Unicom has
cooperated with Ericsson in the provinces of Yunnan and Jilin
and four other provinces and cities.

China Unicom's main challenge remains carving out a place for
itself in the face of the dominance in the market wielded by
China Telecom, the nation's once-monopoly.

China Unicom said it has 2 million mobile phone subscribers.
Its share of mobile network capacity should rise to 9 million
lines by the end of the year, or about 20% of China's total,
while its share of total subscribers will reach 12%, the
company's president recently told local media.
