To Pat: Have followed your posts on various SI threads for some time and "respect". Would you put on your analytical hat and give us a rundown comparing the new JDS/Uniphase when it happens with SDLI please. They are the only "pure plays" I know of also. Used to own SDLI but sold a year or so ago when they ran into a bad patch. Is it your view that SDLI is not only fully on track now but cutting into JDS Fitel or Uniphase's market share? Any comment appreciated. Chaz

as far as i know no merchant mfr. has jds/unph's array of fiber-optic components. nortel and lucent do, but i think they'll continue to outsource as well as make their own. obviously there is competition for each of their lines by different outfits. i think that any merchant mfr. that tries to fully compete with jds/unph has a big task. so i don't question they have a great future, i question 20 times sales and 60 times earnings. all the wonderful facts about them are accounted for in those figures. they don't allow for competition and resultant lower unit prices. the overall huge growth of their industry will help accomodate competition's effect. but i was hoping a technologist would tell me that the jds-unph merger will likely produce a patented technology for hybrid modules. that's worth 20 times sales.
i don't know how much of their revenues are in lithium niobates nor why it's an advantage to have a pure play in it as opposed to being a systems supplier and having the full array of components in-house as well. all comes down to whether the stock is fully priced now.
the company is terrific, it is on george gilder's list and he knows a helluva lot more than i do.
