Goldman's Cohen says U.S. stock market level fair

WASHINGTON, April 28 (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs & Co. strategist Abby Cohen said on Wednesday she believed the U.S. stock market was around fair value, based on earnings growth expectations and calm U.S. inflation.

''When we put all of these facts together we conclude that the market today is roughly at fair value,'' the well-watched analyst said at a conference in Washington organized by the Economic Strategy Institute.

Cohen emphasized that her stocks outlook was based on conservative assumptions. Asked if she had a revised stocks forecast in light of the latest run-up in prices, she said her firm's practice was to avoid revising price targets too frequently and only in reaction to a significant amount of news.

She said Goldman was waiting for more reporting of earnings from S&P 500 companies that have not yet reported. ''That won't be available to us for another couple of weeks,'' she said.

She added that recent developments had been encouraging for the forecast. ''Over the last month or so, if anything, the economic data have become that much more encouraging and the corporate profit data have been absolutely stunning.''

Cohen described the broadening of stock ownership in the United States as a reflection of healthy consumer confidence and said it was a good thing.
