Great find, Mike F.

Vaguely remember this article from months ago.

Believe that such limitations have largely disappeared. Broadband access through cable or xDSL can't restrict subscribers from retrieving any and all Net content. If it did, few would sign up.

What you've dredged up is ironic. AOL has tried beating up ATHM and Roadrunner, along with lobbying in Washington, to "open up" cable access even more--so that its subscribers don't have to pay *twice* (once for broadband Net access, once for AOL's "value-added"). So far, its campaign has been unsuccessful, as ATHM and Roadrunner take the position that they're providing pure Net access and have no obligation to grant AOL special concessions (like a discount to offset AOL's subscription fee). Thus, many AOL subscribers who sign up for broadband access via cable are dropping AOL; they find they can live without it.

As a result, AOL is hard at work trying to create a survivable broadband strategy.
