Jim - " Intels own benchmarks tell you a Celeron 466 blows away a Pentium III 450, FPU. For a mere third the price.
SSE will have about the same effect as MMX. Looks good but the apps aren't there."

I've seen data that indicates the response to the PIII by the Business Market has been very favorable. One feature, that has been greeted with enthusiasm is the Serial ID feature, available only on the PIII.

Also, it is very early to be calling the Katmai instruction set a failure. I have also seen data recently that indicates the Gaming an Software industry, as well as other 3D Software Developers, are very much into optimizing for the PIII's SSE's.

I don't have any links to share, so I could understand if you feel the need to shoot holes in my assertions, but I stand by them.

blaxxun interactive Offers 3D NURBS Technology

Cooperation With Intel on Next-Generation Internet Solutions

SAN FRANCISCO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 12, 1999--After completing the optimization of its Community Platform 4.0 for the Intel Pentium III processor, blaxxun now supports NURBS technology.

For the first time, objects developed with NURBS techniques can be displayed via the Internet. NURBS reduce the bandwidth requirements for complex 3D data by an average of 80% while displaying three-dimensional models with astounding realism. A new generation of Internet applications that are no longer restricted to text and simple graphics or animations now becomes possible.

The new NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) technology is a co-development of blaxxun and Intel that provides a variety of improvements in addition to the faster display of high-quality 3D graphics. Content can be developed faster and more economically, since a single model can be used for all target platforms. NURBS technology allows complex animations and is supported by authoring tools such as 3D Studio MAX.

Content developers including Lunatic in Germany and Crea in France are already using blaxxun's NURBS technology. NURBS, long established in the graphics sector, is now available for the first time on PC platforms.

NURBS technology describes 3D models mathematically so that they can be transferred in a very compact form over the Internet. In contrast to traditional techniques, with which entire 3D models with all their polygons must be transferred from the Web to the PC, NURBS transfers only a few bytes and takes advantage of the Pentium III processor's performance to reproduce the model on the PC. This makes it possible to transfer animated 3D models over a normal phone line in real time.

''NURBS technology on Pentium III-based systems represents the breakthrough for 3D on the Internet,'' said Franz Buchenberger, CEO of blaxxun interactive. ''New interactive Web sites with rich media content can finally be realized on the Internet.''

blaxxun interactive, based in San Francisco and Munich, is the global leader in products and solutions for multimedia communication on the Internet and intranets. Its technology platform ties multimedia with rich communication features allowing the building of visually striking communities and venues where users interact and network with each other in 2D and 3D.

Applications are tailored to commerce, to collaboration with online education/training forums and virtual offices, and to communities like the award winning Cybertown (www.cybertown.com). More information about blaxxun interactive can be found at www.blaxxun.com.

Windows Media Technologies Optimized for Intel Pentium III Xeon Processor

Performance and Productivity Boost Enables Streaming Media Content Providers To Lower Costs and Deliver Richer Visual Quality and Realism to End Users

REDMOND, Wash., March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT - news) announced today that its Windows® Media Technologies will be optimized for Intel Corp.'s new Intel Pentium® III Xeon(TM) processor, resulting in significant time and cost savings for content providers and a sharper, smoother visual experience for end users. Microsoft plans for a future release of Windows Media Technologies to contain an updated MPEG 4 video codec that is optimized for the Pentium III Xeon processor.

Faster Encoding Rates Reduce Development Costs

In a business where time directly translates to money, content developers are always looking for ways to increase efficiency. The Pentium III Xeon-optimized MPEG 4 codec in Windows Media Technologies accelerates encoding speed and can encode on-demand video up to 40 percent faster than on the previous-generation Pentium II Xeon chip. In addition, the codec encodes live video at 640 x 480 at a rate of 25 fps on a dual Pentium III Xeon 500 -- a significant increase in performance. This improved encoding performance will help boost productivity and save development time and costs for content developers.

''By optimizing Windows Media Technologies for the Pentium III Xeon processor, we will provide our streaming media customers with dramatic improvements in speed, frame rate and resolution for on-demand and real-time encoding,'' said Tod Nielsen, general manager for developer relations at Microsoft. ''Our new MPEG 4 codec in Windows Media Technologies is optimized to provide content developers with the fastest encoding performance available, resulting in huge cost savings.''

''The combination of Intel's Pentium III Xeon processor with Microsoft's optimized Windows Media Technologies-based MPEG 4 codec will enable companies to deploy scalable, high-performing streaming media solutions,'' said Andre Walper, director of marketing, Intel workstation products group. ''By taking advantage of these two new technologies, content developers will be able to deliver a faster, more compelling streaming media experience.''

New Levels of Visual Quality and Realism for the End User

The MPEG 4 codec optimized for the Pentium III Xeon processor provides higher resolution and frame rates for live encoding, affording end users a much crisper and smoother video experience. Pentium III Xeon processor optimization also boosts decoder and post-filter performance, leaving ample processing power for displaying rich visual data on the client. 3Dlabs PowerThreads SSE OpenGL Driver Boosts 3D Geometry Performance With Intel's Pentium III Xeon

Multi-Threaded Dynamic Load-Balancing Distributes 3D Geometry and Lighting Processing in Parallel Between Hardware Processors and Multiple Pentium III CPUs for Highest Performance

SUNNYVALE, Calif., March 17 /PRNewswire/ -- 3Dlabs®, Inc. (Nasdaq: TDDDF - news) today announced PowerThreads(TM) SSE, the next-generation OpenGL driver for the 3Dlabs Oxygen(TM) family of high-performance 3D workstation graphics accelerators. PowerThreads SSE transparently leverages the Streaming SIMD (Single Instructions, Multiple Data) Extensions for single or multiple Intel® Pentium® III and Pentium III Xeon(TM) processors in parallel with geometry hardware to deliver the highest possible 3D geometry and lighting performance on current and future Oxygen cards.

The PowerThreads SSE driver will be demonstrated at the CeBIT trade show from March 18 through March 25, 1999 in Hanover, Germany, and is expected to become available in second quarter of 1999 for the Oxygen GMX and the new Oxygen VX1 board, also announced today. Additionally, the driver will be downloadable from 3Dlabs' web site at www.3dlabs.com upon its release for current users of Oxygen GMX.

''3Dlabs has been a pioneer in developing technologies that accelerate the entire 3D graphics pipeline, from geometry and lighting transformations to rasterization. The outstanding geometry performance of the new PowerThreads SSE driver is made possible with the addition of Streaming SIMD Extensions in the Pentium III and Pentium III Xeon processors,'' said Andre Wolper, director of industry marketing, Intel Workstation Products Group. ''The combination of advanced technologies from Intel and 3Dlabs yields a powerful solution for professional graphics workstation users.''

''With PowerThreads SSE, 3Dlabs offers graphics drivers with the industry's most sophisticated handling of frequently-bottlenecked geometry transformations and lighting calculations,'' said Greg Weiss, research analyst of graphics and workstations at D.H. Brown Associates. ''PowerThreads SSE combines the benefits of Pentium III's Streaming SIMD floating point with the unique ability to load-balance those calculations across geometry hardware and multiple CPUs.''

About the PowerThreads SSE OpenGL Driver

PowerThreads SSE is the only complete geometry and lighting solution for Windows NT workstations, combining 3Dlabs' proven multi-threading OpenGL drivers and hardware geometry processing with new SSE-optimized, load-balancing technology that dynamically distributes the geometry and lighting workload in parallel across multiple Pentium III CPUs and on-board hardware geometry processors.

When driving an entry-level graphics accelerator with no on-board geometry processing, the PowerThreads drivers use Streaming SIMD Extensions (SSE) to accelerate geometry transform and lighting calculations on Windows workstations equipped with Pentium III processors. Performance benefits from the SSE optimizations for geometry and lighting limited applications range up to 100%. Additionally, 3Dlabs' proven multi-threaded driver technology incorporated into PowerThreads SSE automatically distributes the geometry and lighting calculations across multiple CPUs for even faster OpenGL performance. A second CPU can boost performance by up to an additional 60%.

When driving a graphics accelerator with an on-board GLINT® Gamma(TM) hardware geometry and lighting processor, PowerThreads SSE performs real-time load balancing between the Gamma and the host CPUs for a dynamically balanced workload distribution for optimal application performance. Due to load balancing, the combination of hardware and CPU processing power is additive and always provides superior performance when compared to CPUs alone. In addition, offloading the geometry load to a hardware processor frees CPU cycles -- resulting in faster application performance.

''3Dlabs has a dedicated software team to leverage the Pentium III so that our existing and future end-users gain maximum benefit from their investment in Intel CPUs and 3Dlabs graphics hardware. Our PowerThreads SSE driver ensures that Oxygen boards continue to provide the highest levels of performance today -- and in the future as CPU speeds increase,'' said Neil Trevett, vice president of workstation products at 3Dlabs. ''3Dlabs is maintaining our aggressive geometry processor roadmap to ensure that on-board geometry processing maintains its performance advantage over the fastest CPUs, and now PowerThreads SSE combines the best of both worlds -- enabling 3Dlabs to be the only vendor to ship a complete, integrated hardware and software geometry processing solution.''

As an example of the power of the PowerThreads SSE drivers, the new $299 Oxygen VX1 card delivers a Viewperf Light-02 score of 1.49 (1280x1024 True-color 60Hz) -- equaling the performance of many boards three times the price. For detailed information on the Oxygen line of graphics accelerators and PowerThreads SSE driver technology, including complete up to date benchmark figures, please visit our Web site at 3dlabs.com or call 3Dlabs directly at (800) 464-3348 or (408) 530-4700.

MONTREAL, March 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Discreet (Nasdaq: DSLGF - news) today announced that paint*, effect* and 3D Studio MAX® its award-winning Windows- NT based paint, special effects and 3D modeling and animation

software, have been optimized to run on the new Pentium® III Xeon(TM) processor. Discreet has rewritten several filters in paint* and effect* to take advantage of the new Streaming SIMD Extensions (SSE) instructions in the Pentium III chips. All three applications are multi-threaded by nature so they take full advantage of multiple CPU systems, one of the many advantages of the Xeon processor. There are currently eight optimized filters expected to be available on March 17th direct from the Discreet website (www.discreet.com).

The recently launched 3D Studio MAX R3, a major new release of the world's best-selling professional 3D modeling and animation solution for PCs, also makes full use of Streaming SIMD optimized drivers for Open GL, Heidi and Direct 3D. For example 3D Studio MAX has seen an approximate 30% increase in viewport performance using Autodesk's Heidi Driver allowing animators to work more efficiently, saving time and allowing animators to concentrate on the next step of the creation process.

Mahmoud Al-Daccak, vice president of products at Discreet, commented, ''Artists using paint*, effect* and MAX will see huge time savings when using the optimized paint* and effect* plug-in filters and accelerated display which are expected to be 30% faster. We will simply offer the enhancements as downloads from our website, so users can immediately take advantage of the latest technology and best possible tools for the job. We are looking forward to the possibilities of optimizing more filters in the future that take advantage of the Pentium III instructions.''

Discreet tested the performance of the new 550 MHz Pentium III Xeon processor rendering a video sequence in paint*. The test compares the relative performance of the 450 MHz Pentium II Xeon processor, using plug-ins that presently ship with paint* and effect*, with a 550 MHz Pentium III Xeon processor, using pre-release versions of these plug-ins optimized to use Streaming SIMD Extensions. The sequence rendered 90 frames of video, making extensive use of the new optimized Gaussian Blur, Dolly Blur and Lens Flare using Streaming SIMD Extensions. The results of the test showed that this sequence could be rendered 2.5 times as fast with the new filters on the 550 MHz Pentium III Xeon processor. Other video sequences and video effects may show different performance results, but on average the new filters are about twice as fast as the original filters running on the same CPU. In some cases the new filters were found to be four times as fast.

paint* and effect*

paint* is an interactive, vector-based painting and animation system for manipulating and enhancing both still frames and frame sequences. effect* offers digital artists distinctive video compositing, clip animation, and visual effects capabilities. With these applications, digital artists become directors of moving pictures: painting, animating and modifying images for film, video, web, animation and multimedia. Both applications share a library of special effects plug-ins; a number of these plug-ins have been optimized to take advantage of Streaming SIMD Extensions. The first eight filters to be made available to users are Gaussian Blur, Unconstrained Gaussian Blur, Dolly Blur, Pan Blur, Lens flare, Twirl, MinMax, 3D depth of field

Excite Launches Rich Media Web Experience, Next Dimension of World Wide Web

Excite Extreme Gives Consumers Visual Web Navigation and Search Using The Power of the New Intel(R) Pentium(R) III Processor

REDWOOD CITY, Calif., March 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Excite, Inc. (Nasdaq: XCIT - news) today launched Excite Extreme, the first ''concept'' site showcasing a highly visual, 3-D Web search and navigation experience. Available today through the Intel® WebOutfitter(SM) Service at www.intelweboutfitter.com, the 3D browsing experience highlights the possibilities of the Web when the performance of a Pentium® III processor is combined with the breadth of the Web. Excite Extreme is also expected to be available via excite.com in Q2, 1999.

''Working with Intel on this project has been a great opportunity to innovate, experiment and learn,'' said Adam Hertz, vice president of Development at Excite. ''We're using Excite Extreme to explore ideas for the next generation of user experiences on the Web. The high performance of the Pentium III processor lets us shift more of the work of generating the interface to the user's desktop computer. This is especially important for 'middleband' users.''

About the Excite Extreme Experience

Excite Extreme offers search and personalized content, several of the most popular features of Excite's portal service. All of these features are presented in a highly visual, 3-D environment. The home page of Excite Extreme presents the user with three areas to select from -- a customizable ''My Excite'' area, a topic-based ''Channels'' area and a ''Tools'' area. Each area of the home page is represented on the screen as a titled ''globe'' with related topics circling the globe. For example, the ''My Excite'' globe represents the user's start page information. Around the My Excite globe are orbiting objects that navigate to the users personalized information, such as custom stock quotes, weather forecasts and horoscope. The personalized content circling the My Excite globe is selected by the user in the same way consumers personalize their start page on Excite.com today.

In addition to easy visual navigation to information, it is also simple to return to areas of interest. On the upper left side of the screen is a trail of images showing where the user has visited. The user can at anytime click to the areas previously visited and they are immediately returned to that location, eliminating the need to click the ''back'' button.

''By offering a visual way to navigate the Web, we can provide more information in a single environment and give the user an easy way to select where they want to go at that moment,'' continued Hertz. ''Excite Extreme eliminates the need for a user to scroll around a page or click back and forth between areas because the service provides a user with the ability to simply click on any visual object on the screen and they are immediately taken to that area of interest.''

Excite Extreme Search

Excite's award-winning search is also made available on all pages within the Extreme environment through a search box in the upper right hand corner, giving the user the ability to change search topics without having to change the page they are on. Upon choosing to search a topic, the search results page delivered is also presented in a unique 3D visual. The search results are delivered in three primary categories, Excite directory results, general Web results, and news related results, with each differentiated by color and placement.

Beyond the Banner: Innovative Advertising Opportunities

Beyond traditional banners, this new environment offers interactive, rich media content showcase areas that can be sponsored by key corporate partners. For example, a major retailing partner, using 3D technology, will be able to show the user how she or he would look in a particular clothing item, and even place them in a location of their choice while modeling the garment.

Excite Extreme Requirements

Excite Extreme is a high-end product which is best viewed and experienced using a Pentium® III processor-based PC. Excite Extreme is built purely in JAVA, letting users with the most powerful computers and operating system have the ability to enjoy this 3-D experience.

Razorfish, razorfish.com, a digital change management company, collaborated with Excite and Intel on the product design and development. ''This project redefines the way people access information. We see this as a first step in the evolution of visual interactivity on the web, and it's a fun site to use,'' said Shane Ginsberg, Solutions Director of Razorfish.

The ground-breaking 3-D technologies which make Excite Extreme possible were developed by Ideaworks3d, a market leading company in this area. ''We created these technologies to enable online publishers to reach the largest possible audience with rich, interactive 3-D content,'' commented Adrian Sack, CEO of Ideaworks3d, www.ideaworks3d.com.
