>RAID

Quantum hasn't said anything about RAID because they don't have the pieces yet. I'm betting they'll enter the market within a year, unless they get their foot in the door with EMC (unlikely). The reason is simple, the margins are humongous. Vertically integrate the technology from a small RAID producer like Ciprico or any number of private firms or develop it in-house (it's not rocket science), and you've got a RAID box that your OEM customers would be happy to push as their own, branded product with attendant service and consulting contracts. This is basically the same upsell model used with ATL. And it'll work, too. If Quantum management hasn't been thinking along these lines, then they'd be derelict. Besides, the Quantum lackeys who read this board can always communicate this to management.

You can't unleash a price war if you don't got the goods. Peel back Finis's boasting and Seagate's FUD, and evaluate the technology. Despite the hype, the only thing likely to be cheaper than a Bigfoot TS is... the Fireball CX. Yeah, I know they can't fully ramp all their new stuff until they get them qualed, but I'd rather be qualing new stuff than not have any stuff to qual. Repeat after me: Time to market, time to market, time to market.

The margin potential for the SCSI drives are just incredible. Remember, they have 2.5x the areal density of last year's drives. Spec out the cost of an 18GB FB+ KA and the cost of an essentially identical 18GB Atlas IV. You eyes will pop out at just how much they can cut prices and still earn a good GM.
