Server Farm

And for almost everybody the equipment becomes an immediately obsolescing asset that must be fully used or become an unrecoverable cost. For much of the cost, Intel merely leaves the fab on for a few more minutes a day ...

Mary, re:Nowadays, almost any two people (with or without a dog) can get into the services
business and compete with the major players. In many cases the bigger players do not
have any advantage. In fact they are frequently disadvantaged by a high cost structure.

If we're talking critical apps., no down-time, etc. then I would think services is extremely important. Most IT managers would go with an "IBM" to support their critical hardware/software/networking needs, especially if its based on IBM products, rather than outsource to a 3rd-party vendor.

Mary,
Huh??? Those multi hundred million dollar contracts that IBM seems to announce on a weekly basis can be handled by 'any two folks with a dog'??? Last time I checked, it took a bit more than two folks to handle the outsourcing of an entire corporation's data processing operation. I would say the barriers to entry here are pretty high also...

Regards,
John

PS - Keep in mind that IBM announced this quarter that they have a 50+ billion dollar services backlog and are adding to it in the amount of 10 billion + per quarter...

Mary,

Inspired by my three year old:

Old Mr. Barrett built some farms.
I-N-T-C, Oh.
And on those farms he had some servers.
I-N-T-C, Oh.

With a click, click here,
And a double click there,
Here a click, there a click.
Everywhere a click, click.

Old Mr. Barrett built some farms.
Intel's in the dough.
