Agreed, having a system is crucial. I look back on the heady summer days of 1996 when I first found a "love" for trading. It was a great market, and just about everything was going up. I made so many stupid trading mistakes (buying at market at the open, selling into weakness, etc.) but made money anyway (until a dumb little stock called BNGO wiped out nearly all my gains!). But then came the Fall, and some market weakness, and suddenly my luck ran out. It was then that I began reading everything I could find about TA, and various trading systems based on it.
