mb, But they were too big to destroy. Germany, Russia and France couldn't afford to have them fall in the other's sphere of influence. The Hapsburgs were originally chosen to be Holy Roman Emperors because they were strong enough to offer the Pope backup when things got tough, but not strong enough to make him head for the hills. The Papacy had gotten a wee bit tired of the Hohenstaufen Emperors marching into Rome and kicking the Popes off the throne.

It didn't work, though. Charles II was the most powerful man in the world and he bullied the Popes as well as any Hohenstaufen could. <g> But after his death the Hapsburgs split Spain and the Empire, and they got weak again.

Except for getting robbed one time, I have always enjoyed Austria. They are sort of like Germans who know how to have fun. <g>
