Jim, re analogy for a pipeline, why not simply a production line, consisting of several work stations (old fashioned work stations) where different work gets done at each station? Imagine an auto assembly line you've seen film of on TV. Perfect. Or, do you remember the old Jackie Gleason character "the Poor Soul" and the assembly line he worked on where they were making chocolate cakes or something, and he would pass partially assembled cakes on to the next person. It went OK until they sped up the line, when things would always get all fouled up.

Pre-Amp and alimentary-whatever tract...sheesh.
