If you wish to know one of the reasons that the stock has been volatile just look at who owns 5% of the outstanding shares, Vinik Asset Management. I have found him to be a great trader in and out of stocks but he's definitely NOT a long-term investor. The last time I ran across his firm (better to say he ran over my portfolio) he had just accumulated just over 5% of AVTC and waited one day after his 13G was made public to begin dumping shares to people who jumped in due to his stance on the company. As a result the stock which had climbed 40% during his accumulation fell 60% as he unloaded.

Also, please note that 3Dfx's share price is almost EXACTLY at its price as of when the deal was priced per the proxy statement.
