Its a sad fact of historical accident that the US has more in common with Japan than it does with Mexico or Argentina. Geographic proximity is not a strong indicator of mutual interest. The US has a greater interest in alliance with the Anglo world than of Latin America, which shares neither cultural nor institutional affinities with us. The historical tide would wash Pan-Americanism as far as the Rio Grande, and no furthur Im afraid.
