Yeah, I was thinking about that, too, but when I read further there was this statement:

"...an optical sensor and an on-board digital signal processor (DSP) that track movement on virtually any surface."

The Sun optical mice required a special metal mousepad with a reflective grid on the surface and then just tracked the refection of a pair of LEDs in the mouse. And it certainly didn't have a DSP. This MS mouse claims to work on most any surfaces (there would have to be some granularity within its level of resolution, though). So, I could use it on the bare table top or on my pants leg. I know nothing about it but I am anxious to see how this actually works.
