No he wasn't a true Medici but old Lorenzo treated him as a foster child and he was for all intensive purposes family. I do have a picture of Lorenzo's crest which went with his coat of arms. It was 3 interlocking diamond rings which supposedly bore a strong resemblance to the kids 3 circles. So it appears that the stone mason's mark was also a crest as well rather than a coat of arms.
