I had bad experience last year--to say the least-with one of my stocks, it cost me thousands of dollars. The company missed earnings, and the stock opened 50% lower than the close of the night before. I was using a discount broker, and had no stop loss in place. I bailed, good thing because it never recovered, and the brokerage house told me a stop loss wouldn't do any good in a situation like that, because no one could get out before the open. I always wondered if I could have done anything different or if I was given some bogus information about how stop losses work.
