Dell continues to see PC growth at 14-15 pct, co to outpace overall mkt growth

SAN FRANCISCO (AFX-ASIA) - Dell Computer Corp continues to expect personal
computer market shipments to grow at 14-15 pct in "the next few years", and its
own shipments to outpace overall market growth, chief financial officer Tom
Meredith said.
Speaking at the Hambrecht & Quist technology conference here, Meredith said
Dell also expects shipments to grow in the first half of the year, a period in
which PC sales are often at their worse.
He added that concerns about a slowdown in PC sales were unfounded, given
the "fairly predictive" flat growth in shipments in the first quarter from the
fourth quarter in every year.
"Because we are both the manufacturer and (distribution) channel, we are a
far better proxy for demand than the indirect channel," Meredith said.
He noted that while Dell ranked second in U.S. PC shipments in the third
quarter, it slipped to third place in the fourth quarter, as "we were not
filling the pipeline".
Dell expects PC growth to be fueled in part by growth in global spending on
information technology and broadband access.
He noted that countries outside of the U.S spend half the percentage of
gross domestic product on IT than does the U.S.
