When I was in Germany, practically the only time I had to speak German was when I addressed someone over 30. Germans of my age are fascinated with Americans, it was really flattering to have so much attention just because of my shoes (sneakers are, by the way, the tell-tale sign of an American ;) ).

I was never sure if this was just European multi-linguism or not.

Juanita, as I was adding the part about India and the Philippines, it occurred to me that Germany, which has a large number of people who are fluent in English, and perhaps some other countries, might also qualify. As I said, English is the new Latin, however Hispanonphiles may complain... and yes, aren't the Quebecois hard- heads!
