Jim - The Registers latest antics

1) They posted a "Barrett Diary Spoof", in which was a comment about Tianamen Square that was in extremely poor taste. The post seemed to disappear within a half an hour from the site's main pages, but I can still get it with a link I saved. For informational purposes only, as a comment to this man's scruples:

2) From Anand Tech, regarding the PIII overheating story:

anandtech.com

The Register has posted a rather strange article on the Pentium III. They have reported that Intel's 550MHz Pentium III has some "serious thermal issues:"

Readers will recall that Intel introduced the new SECC2 package for the PIII in a bid to avoid the need for active heatsinks (fans to you and I).
By removing the thermal plate from the original Slot 1 cartridge, Chipzilla reckoned that heat transfer from the processor die would be enhanced to the point where passive heatsinks would be more than adequate.
But several PC makers have had their fingers burned (literally) by PIIIs and with the advent of the hot new 550MHz version, fans are back in fashion, big time.

You can read the entire article here but please note that AnandTech has verified the absolute opposite of what The Register concluded, so take what you're reading with a grain of salt (well, more like a bucket...). Most PIII's will be shipping with a heatsink and fan for added protection so there is nothing to worry about ;)
