For some reason, many years ago the International Robert Burns Society had its annual meeting in Annapolis, and I ran into a bunch of Scotsmen late at night who had closed down the bars and resorted to an all night deli. It was incredibly difficult, at first, to understand a complete sentence, although I got better at it as our conversation wore on. I tried to guess as best I could, so I would not too often have to have them repeat, and sometimes I would just nod and smile...
