re: conspiracies

I don't believe in traditional conspiracy theory per se, my conception of it is best illustrated by an interview I saw years ago.

I don't remember any of the specifics, but it was some sort of Sixty Minutesish news program that did a report on the Trilateral Commission. Their official spokesman said that they weren't the sinister force they were reputed to be, but were rather like a social club for extremely powerful people, sort of like an incredibly elite Elk's Lodge.

Anybody who's ever lived in a small town knows that the majority of the behind the scenes wheeling and dealing that takes place at the intersection of business and politics happens at the local Elk's Lodge (or what have you).

So what you have is essentially the same result (a relatively small number of people with entirely too much power), but without the Star Chamber (or X-Files) trappings.

Least that's the way I see it.

I must admit that on reflection, and under the influence of your logical skill, I sway further from the notion of a manufactured incident. But it sure made good prose at the time.

Of course, if we've learned nothing else about Bill Clinton, we should've at least learned that he can do some amazingly blatant crap and get away with it. At least so far.
