Majister Ludi. Unfortunately, I've started it repeatedly, but I just can't stick with it. But Hesse is in many ways my inspiration. "Steppenwolf" opened my eyes to the reason for my inescapable, at least low-level, melancholy. And I really found myself in "Demian." It's ironic that you mention Hesse. I wrote out a response to your description of yourself, but it felt too self-indulgent, so I scrapped it. Here goes again, short version: I'm entirely American. My family settled in Jamestown and has been intermingling ever since. I'm 6'0", average build, with bright blue eyes and receding ash brown hair that grows to the middle of my back that I wear (yes indeed) in a ponytail. I have a full beard, but it's more a result of not shaving than it is a deliberately cultivated thing. And I had included in the original (unposted) post, basically as a literary shot in the dark, that I have, ala "Demian," the mark of Cain. People seem to recognize that I know things. Some are intrigued by it, others are threatened by it. I can see my copy of "Majister Ludi" from here. Maybe I'll try it again. I have always felt vaguely guilty for not finishing it.
