APPI news ... about a .065 stock... April 29, 1999 10:00 AM HERMOSA BEACH, Calif., April 29 /PRNewswire/ -- HealthSpan, Inc. HSPN announced today they have signed a Letter of Intent with Advanced Plant Pharmaceuticals, Inc. APPI to jointly produce, market, and sell whole plant nutriceutical products on an exclusive basis for North America. HealthSpan is a formulator, manufacturer, marketer, seller, and distributor of products into the rapidly expanding nutriceutical food, vitamin and dietary aids marketplace and into the emerging dermaceutical marketplace. Nutriceuticals (nutritional pharmaceuticals) are foods, vitamins, and other dietary supplements that have proven therapeutic health benefits. Dermaceuticals are topical remedies that have proven therapeutic benefits. HealthSpan will have the exclusive right to market, sell, and distribute to all markets in North America, to include the rapidly growing Internet marketing and sales arena, for any and all products developed by APPI on a first refusal basis. APPI will be responsible for all product development, formulation, clinicals, patents, processing and manufacturing. APPI has a patent pending Whole Plant Pharmaceutical Grade Process which converts a whole plant into a "Fully Standardized" pharmaceutical grade product. "Fully Standardized" nutriceuticals offer the human body more ingredients to cure and heal itself because the whole plants are processed without using extraction methods that castrate the chemical formations of the plants in use. HealthSpan is confident that the "Fully Standardized" manufacturing process developed by APPI, which means the potency levels and critical ingredient amounts of whole plants processed under APPI's patent pending process, will set a new and important standard for the herbal supplement marketplace. "Every consumer is looking for quality herbal supplements that deliver the greatest amount of natural potency and that is what HealthSpan will be able to deliver to the market through this business relationship," commented Steven Cady, CEO of HealthSpan, Inc. According to John Troup, Vice President of Scientific Affairs for General Nutrition Corporation ("GNC"), "a nutriceutical market of $12 Billion is awaiting the specialty retailers of vitamin and mineral supplements within the next two years." Nutriceuticals, according to GNC, are vitamin and mineral supplements, herbal products, food and beverage products, and sport nutrition items -- all products now found in drug stores and vitamin shops. One can logically conclude that the overall market for nutriceuticals is, in fact, much larger. (Source: Article-Panel of Medical Experts Eyes Nutraceuticals, New York Times, April 1, 1998.) With a growing market of this size, HealthSpan intends to create a meaningful demand and branded presence for the Joint Ventures' patented "Fully Standardized" pharmaceutical grade products. HealthSpan recognizes the tremendous growth occurring nationally in the cholesterol reduction category and it believes that the Lo-Chol(TM) brand, which helps lower total cholesterol and triglycerides while increasing HDL (good cholesterol) and balancing the proportion of HDL to LDL (bad cholesterol), will become a leading seller in this category. APPI currently produces a whole plant "All Natural" garlic (no chemicals added, preserved in nature's original chemical formation). HealthSpan will be introducing the "Fully Standardized" garlic as well as an entire line of herbal nutriceuticals (St. John's Wort, Echinacea, Ginkgo Biloba, Ginseng and other leading herbal supplements) to the marketplace in the immediate future.
