More On Guerillas

Your message was a little dense, so forgive me if I didn't get it all. But it sounds like you are saying that the rebels are not driven by logic or by what is good for "the masses". They are just going to do terrorist acts because that's the business they're in, and by sheer intimidation they can foster an environment that is hostile to "capitalist gringos".

One of the posters on the Yahoo board is a Columbian with a more intimate knowlege than the rest of us of the Columbian rebels, and his take is that Marxism really has little to do with it anymore. What may have started at Marxist organizations, he says, are now nothing more than intimidating gangs involved in the drug trade.

I think ultimately logic wins over even "the masses". Columbia has valuable untapped natural resources. They could use the money and they certainly need to diversify their economy considering that their primary product is illegal. The Columbian state oil company is 50% partner in all successful oil exploration in their country (not to mention the 20% royalties they receive). If companies like Harken develop a vibrant oil industry then it logically follows that Columbians in general will also benefit.
