Qualcomm's Phonemaking Business Isn't for Sale, Sulpizio Says

San Francisco, April 28 (Bloomberg) -- Qualcomm Inc., a maker of cellular equipment, said its
mobile-phone making business isn't for sale.

Some analysts have speculated that the company might sell the handset business because it
agreed to sell its unprofitable network-equipment unit to No. 3 mobile-phone maker Ericsson AB in
March. ''The handset business is not for sale,'' said Qualcomm President Richard Sulpizio at the
Hambrecht & Quist Technology Conference in San Francisco. ''We can be competitive in this
business.''

San Diego-based Qualcomm faces stiff competition from Finnish company Nokia Oyj, Sweden's
Ericsson, Motorola Inc. and other mobile-phone makers. Right now Qualcomm is producing about
750,000 phones a month, and plans to boost capacity to 1 million phones a month by year-end.

Sulpizio said the handset business is profitable and he hopes to boost gross margins to a target of
25 percent to 26 percent.
