You're right - I had forgotten about the whistle. I don't remember if he finally gave in for the job offer too avoid prosecution or not but there certainly have been some hackers that ended up being hired by the people they were hacking. I sure thought AT&T was one that ended up hiring someone, I suppose a little research would tell us.

Richard,

The hacker you are referring to is known as captain crunch

Captain Crunch / John Draper is probably the person who did the most to bring hacking into the public eye. While the mainstream might not be prepared to admit it, he definitely played an important role in the deveoplment of the personal computer.

He's in the Hacker's hall of fame: users.forthnet.gr

Here's his internet autobiography.

I think that the April fools pranks that Janice, Jeff and Bill have been pulling off have been amazing.

But it appears that Captain Crunch, and his friends really knew how to pull some over-the-top pranks. I am not recommending that anyone try this at home... for those of you who are jargon-impaired, just skip over the words that you don't understand, you'll still get the gist of it:

Here's his "Amazing Stories" page:

which contains the following unbelievable tales:

THe Great Wite House Toilet Paper Crisis

And the great santa barbara nuclear hoax
