READ THIS NOW-SAN DIEGO 4/29

One of the world's largest consumer electronics makers joined forces yesterday with San Diego-based MusicMatch in a marriage that could fuel the already explosive growth of the controversial music format MP3. Thompson Multimedia, which makes RCA-brand televisions, CD players and other electronic products, will buy a 20% stake in MusicMatch, a leading maker of software that records, sorts and plays music in the MP3 format.Thompson would be one of the biggest manufacturers to enter the MP3 market. Although Thompson stopped short of declaring it will make hand-held MP3 devices, a spokesman said such a move "certainly would make sense."

Meanwhile, IBM and Time Warner's Road Runner cable modem service, will be using San Diego as a testing ground for a secure, high-speed alternative to MP3.

Thompson's alliance with MusicMatch could fuel ubiquity of the MP3 format, and research estimates are that within five years, MP3 downloads will represent a $1.1 billion market. Thompson is one of the co-designers of MP3.

San Diego is the MP3 hotbed.
