Date: Thursday, April 29 1999 Ericsson was recently awarded a contract from the newly established wireless datacom operator Mowic, for delivery of a new PMD 8000 network (Private/Public Mobile Data) in Sweden. Based on Mobitex technology developed by Ericsson, Mowic is now operating a network on the 450 MHz Euroband. Mowic is planning to offer companies and organizations complete solutions, with flat rate or data-volume based pricing, within several fields of operation such as public transport, goods transport and wireless transactions monitoring and control. The Mobitex-based PMD 8000 system is designed specifically to give wireless IT-support to business activities being performed outside the office. The network supports wireless e-mail and wireless access to the corporate network, Intranet and Internet. "We are targeting professional mobile data users," says Björn Sabel, president of Mowic. "We see a tremendous opportunity for wireless datacom solutions that deliver increased efficiency and a competitive advantage to innovative companies. At this point, there are many applications and products available that would benefit professional users in many sectors." The international technology company Schlumberger was recently selected by Birka Energy in Stockholm to deliver a heat management solution using Mowic's network.
