Can't imagine but that an affair was always considered a lesser included delight. But I never knew a nymph who said "No, I won't marry you, but if you want a fling or a quickie, I'm game." What poet would pass that up?
As for all this talk of beech trees I think it largely theoretical. The beech I remember had a tangle of surface roots that unsittable on. Not to mention the burrs.
