<<They have a handgun season here because gun nuts lobbied for it. It can't do much for the deer population one way or the other.>>

They have one here because the Department of Natural Resources thought it was necessary. It is held the first part of January for does only. It cuts the herds so they don't over browse the habitat in January and February. It's doe only to reduce the herd size and the crop damage they cause. Permits are on a county by county basis to do the culling where it is most needed. Revolvers or single shots only and of at least 41 caliber. Most hunters use scopes and can hit a baseball at 50 yards.

My neighbor shot 6 deer last year, 2 with a revolver. He has a cloresterol problem and because of that eats only venison as it's no fat and low cloresterol. For hunters who have all they want to eat there are several meat cutters who offer a bargain price and the meat is given to local shelters. This season replaces the damage permits where 25 deer would be shot in the summer and buried per permit.
