WASHINGTON, April 30 (Reuters) - Direct marketer of personal computers Gateway 2000 Inc filed Friday with the Securities and Exchange Commission a shelf registration to sell up to $1 billion in debt securities and preferred and common stock.

Net proceeds will be used for general corporate purposes, the San Diego, Calif.,-based company said.
