Luc, yes it is an over simplified statement and as much can be incorrect. People do not have to have differing views to buy or sell the same stock. Timing of the buy or sale makes a huge difference. I may think a stock is going higher but sell to someone of the same opinion to lock in a profit since I was able to buy much lower much earlier. Happens all the time. You said "Isn't everybody's interest to sell their shares at a higher price to someone who has differing views from you?" The answer is plainly no, everybody's interest is not necessarily to sell to someone who has a different view.
Also, some people's interest is to sway other's opinions of a stock, and some do it naivly and others know exactly what they are doing.
\on another vein, I wonder what randy Jackson was thinking when he sold stoc,k that he was supposed to turn back in to the company, at a much higher price than most others have been able to sell theirs.
