They also don't sue themselves for misappropriation of past tobacco tax receipts. Victims of drunk drivers could sue for past alcohol tax receipts as well.

It's an exciting time to be alive, isn't it?

This is an image that I usually use to describe a human lifetime, but it also works to describe a civilization's lifetime:

Life is like one of those yellow inverted cone/funnel things that I used to see near the entrances of supermarkets that you feed coins into for a charity. There's a little ramp at the top edge of the funnel and when you roll a coin down the ramp it starts to spin around the inner surface of the funnel. It starts off making slow lazy laps around the edge, but as gravity begins to take over and the circles begin to get smaller the coin speeds up. It continues to accelerate and the circles continue to get smaller until it's just a blur spinning in little tiny circles at the very bottom of the funnel. And then it vanishes.

I'm not certain just where our civilization is in that progression, but I do know that things certainly are speeding up and the circles certainly are getting smaller.

As per the anecdotal ancient Chinese curse, we live in interesting times.
