Microsoft Releases Final Test Version of Windows 2000 System

Redmond, Washington, April 29 (Bloomberg) -- Microsoft Corp., the world's biggest software maker, released the final test version of its Windows 2000 operating system, aiming to sell its most ambitious product for the corporate market before 2000.

Microsoft will release interim updates to the test version every five to eight weeks between now and final shipment, said Brian Valentine, head of Windows development for large companies, in a teleconference. The interim updates will be designed primarily to fix software bugs, he said.

Windows 2000 is Microsoft's most aggressive foray to date into the corporate market, where it will run large computer networks and compete against systems made by Sun Microsystems Inc., Novell Inc. and Linux-based systems. The so-called Beta 3 will determine if the software is reliable enough and compatible enough with thousands of application programs, such as those that manage databases and deliver e-mail.

''Reliability is the top priority on our customers' list,'' said Deborah Willingham, head of Windows marketing for corporations.

Beta 3 will be distributed to more than 670,000 businesses, software developers and industry partners in the largest test program for a Windows product. Some 23 selected businesses will run their operations on it, including Interactive Technologies.com Ltd.'s United Interactive Technologies Inc.

Some personal computer makers, including Compaq Computer Corp. and Dell Computer Corp., will pre-install Beta 3. Businesses can buy it for $59.95, which includes five copies of the desktop system PCs and two copies for servers.

Years in the Making

Beta 3 will be the first feature-complete version of Windows 2000, which is about two years late in development and formerly was known as Windows NT. The feedback from testers will determine the exact release date of the final product, Valentine said.

Windows 2000 is an industrial-strength system targeted initially at big companies running large networks for managing everything from customer complaints to inventory control, as well as doing business over the Internet. Together with the Office 2000 package of business software and the online businesses, it will drive Microsoft's growth for years to come.

Windows 2000 comprises a desktop version for running a single personal computer and three server editions for running networks of varying sizes.

Valentine declined to give the price of Windows 2000 or its size in terms of computer code. The number of lines of computer code usually corresponds to a given number of software bugs to be fixed.

Shares of Microsoft, which is based in Redmond, Washington, fell 1/16 to 82 1/16.
