First Cheryl let me caution you on accusing me of "crude language" and "name-calling" ; I have never done either one of these.

>> HWP is splitting up into 2
>> CPQ fired its long-standing CEO NOT because of "temporal" problems
>> of oversaturation in the market.

What your missing is there was a shift (not a slow down) to buying mainly sub $1000 PC's from upstarts like Microwerkz, Emachines and Jabil (and others). High end was oversaturated but like I said that is temporal. We'll see demand increase for > $1000 machines as the PIII roles out replacing PII and comes down in price. Look at DELL, GTW, JBL and hopefully CPQ being the fore-runners. IBM/HP haven't figured out the very competitive PC industry yet.

A UNIX workstation is no more RAS that a PC. If fact I could argue that PC serviceability is much better. DELL offers 24 hour replacement support for 3 years for any component. That means if my drive fails today, a DELL person will be on-site in my house the current day or following day with a replacement drive. Try getting that kind of support from Sun ?

Pardon me, but in the interests of fairness, can you cite the instances of "name-calling" and "crude language"? I must have missed them.

IMHO, you both have good arguments, and you're both right and wrong. Perhaps you could both stop looking at things in one dimension and combine your best points for the better good of the thread?

Regards,

LoD

PC shipments overall increased 24% from Q198 to Q199. CPQ and friends are hurting from reduced margins; notice how the "others" picked up significantly.

No slow down there.
