James...first of all you keep using the term proprietary out of context. The price difference is not much..NOw if you have worked with UNIX for 7 years how can you possibly think NT can even be compared to UNIX..? anyway UNIX was never a ruler in a personal workstation market, however sun keeps selling more small boxes each quarter. Once the paradigm shift towards an N-tier architecture is over other than a few engineers noone will use workstations anymore...client server is DEAD.
