In point of fact, Christine, libertarianism is far more liberal in social terms than any major political bloc. It does not judge one's personal life nor does it pander to PC favoritism. One does not have to ascribe whole cloth to Ayn Rand to insist that people stand on their own feet and (oh, wow!) think, to insist that people take responsibility for themselves and for one another rather than cede a portion of their very humanity to the state. I, too, was educated as an historian. Understanding the wellsprings of any school of thought is crucial to understanding its current manifestation. If you can't comprehend in your thinking where it comes from, you won't see where it is going.
