probably a combination: I agree with this assessment, but I confess that I am not a great one for the opera either. The best libretto ever written was for "Don Giovanni"; the best score, for "The Magic Flute"; the best opera overall, "The Marriage of Figaro". All three, you may observe, are by Mozart. After that, there are many good arias, but most operas are somewhat heavy- handed melodramas. Some of them are pleasant enough to sit through, but few are worth the kind of prices demanded for good seats. So, no, it is not all your fault. I think you will enjoy the movie version of "The Magic Flute", which was directed by Ingmar Bergman, if you can find it in a well- stocked video store (you are in Toronto, so it should be possible). If you do not at least find yourself charmed by the score, then you are still a philistine with a way to go:-)...

<<I went to an opera the other night--- I'll be brief--- The applause at the end , coupled with the laughs at the Humour, and overhearing someone in the lobby at the end say, " That was excellent" made me wonder if these people were for real.. I thought it was mediocre, with base humour, and I've only seen three operas.. Conclusion-- I'm not up to their level of sophistication/cultivation (very possible) or the opera attending crowd are in large,, phonies....

probably a combination>>

Nietzsche was making similiar comments about Opera goers 100 years ago... I for one dont doubt your observation at all.

Don't worry rrman, it only means that you're not bourgeois! That's good news... I personally view culture as a way to UNDERSTAND, to GRASP the world, I don't see it as merely a classy entertainment behavior.
