I am racking my brain on trying to figure out how the market will see this MSFT news. I would have to put my money on the fact that we are entering in what you would call a win/win situation. I think the big worry was AOL getting involved. Now that MSFT is in the picture, we can kiss the worry of AOL good bye. I see MSFT more as an allie than competitor. Just because MSFT/Comcast could get UMG I have a very hard time buying the fact that Comcast would just throw away its stake in ATHM. It is like owning a stock. Lets pretend that RR was publicly traded. Wouldn't all here want to own both ATHM and RR if they had a choice. Or would you want to put all of your eggs in one basket and possibly lose 1/2 of the market share or worse yet, have your company get left behind? If T gets UMG they will definitely jump on RR/ATHM, and if MSFT/Comcast get UMG they can have their cake and eat it too. This is what is appealing to both of these companies. Owning both sides of the coin! They will not toss one side away once they get it. That is why I feel as long as AOL is out of the deal, ATHM is in a win/win situation. The only other company in a better situation with this deal will be UMG.
